Abdou Kounta

April 5, 1950 — January 24, 2011

Abdou Kounta, native-born Senegalese, transitioned Monday, January 24, 2011 at his Columbus residence surrounded by loved ones. A musician with the Ballet National du Senegal, he toured the world as an ambassador of West African dance, music and culture. After coming to the United States in 1976, he co-founded the Kankouran West African Dance Company, Washington D.C., where he served as Music Director until 1992. Upon relocating to Columbus, Ohio in 1997, he co-founded Thiossane West African Dance Institute in 2000. His artistic skills were requested in Japan, as well as with several symphony orchestras throughout the United States. His mastery skills will continue to echo rhythms throughout the lives of family, friends and students for generations to come. Preceded by father Moctar, mother Ami Fall and brother Assane. Survived by wife Suzan Bradford Kounta; son Babacar of Senegal; daughters Aicha of Atlanta and Ami of Columbus; brother Daouda of Columbus; and a host of other loving relatives, extended family and dear friends throughout the world. Burial in Senegal, West Africa. Memorial Service 4:30 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Lincoln Theater, 769 E. Long Street, followed by reception 6:30 p.m. at the King Arts Complex, 867 Mt.
