Alberta “Bert” Gatewood was born November 29, 1934 in Springfield, Tennessee to the late George Andrew Sr. and Lizzie Etta Gatewood. She departed this life peacefully February 26, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio at the golden age of 80. She is preceded in death by her above-mentioned parents and siblings; Mims Gatewood Sr., Robert Nathaniel Gatewood, George Gatewood Jr., Ida Lou Mixon, Maudie Jean Jones, and Alice Tuck. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her pride and joy: Tennis Wayne (Dorothy) Gatewood; beloved grandchildren Kia, Wayne, and Kerry Gatewood; adopted grandchildren Edith (Harvey) Richardson and Julian Davis; precious great-grandchildren Sydni and Nathaniel Gatewood. Her siblings John (Cynthia) Gatewood, Annie Davis, Peggy Gatewood, and Katherine Douglas and dear friend Dorothy McCrory as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends survive her. Bert dedicated her life to caring for others working as a LPN for over 40 years throughout Columbus, Ohio while employed at We Care Health Facility, Benjamin Franklin Tuberculous Hospital, The Ohio Penitentiary, Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital as well as in numerous private duty nursing positions. She also worked for TAT Restaurant and was a former member of Oakley Baptist Church. Bert loved her OSU Buckeyes and if you were anywhere near her during a game; you’d see how loud she could get. She was a very talented baker and cook. She enjoyed baking cookies, telling jokes, softball, traveling with her family, sewing, crocheting, puzzles, and spending time with her family. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her addicting chocolate chip cookies, and her fried fish and potatoes. Bert was a dedicated mother and an even more dedicated grandmother never wanting to miss a moment with her two great-grandchildren. She spent her 80th birthday surrounded in love with her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In December, she was able to travel to Atlanta for Christmas with her family. She will be sorely missed.
