Alice Mae Watkins Stewart was born October 22, 1919 to George Watkins and Alice Miller Watkins in Algoma, West Virginia. She was a graduate of Northfork Negro High School, Class of 1939. Joining at a young age, Alice was lifelong member of Mt. Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Algoma, where she served on the usher board and kitchen committee. On October 4, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leonard Lee Stewart, Sr., who preceded her in death. In 1990, Alice moved to Gahanna, Ohio, where she resided with her youngest son, Michael. Alice departed this life Friday, January 13, 2012 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to her husband and parents, Alice was predeceased by a son Howard McLean Stewart, two brothers Howard and Lincoln Watkins, and four sisters, Marie Dorsett, Juanita Donley, Cortez Crisp, and Gwendolyn McBride. She leaves to cherish her memories, sons Leonard Stewart, Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Edward Stewart, Sr. (Torosa) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Michael W. Stewart of Gahanna, Ohio; daughters Trichita (Harold) Townes and Alice Parker, both of Gahanna, Ohio; stepson Ronnie Stewart of Austin, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, brothers, Earnest P. (Novella) Watkins, Andrew (Annie Mae) Watkins, and Joe Louis Watkins; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Stewart will lie in state after 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2012, in the chapel of DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long Street, Columbus, where the family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Mt. Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Algoma, West Virginia, with visitation at 11 a.m., followed by funeral service at 12 noon. Entombment Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Bluefield, WV. Out-of-town arrangements entrusted to Richardson’s Funeral Home in Bluefield.
