Alonzo Carter, 74, passed away peacefully at home with his loving and devoted wife by his side, on Friday May 20, 2016. Alonzo entered this world on May 26, 1941 in Wheelwright, Kentucky to the late Alonzo and Alma Trudy Lee Carter. He was the 2nd of fourteen siblings. He grew up in parts of Kentucky and West Virginia before starting his adult life in Columbus, Ohio. He worked for over twenty years in the hotel and hospitality industry from which he retired as a Banquet Captain. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed many outdoor activities. He was a member of the Truckin Free Van Club, and the Masons fraternity. Alonzo was baptized into the Genessee Avenue Church of Christ on June 8, 2006. He was affectionately called by various names such as Lonnie, Chief, Captain Carter, Dennis the Menace, Wild Bill, Pops and Papa. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Russell, Jimmy, Frank, David, and John Glen, and sisters, Evelyn, Louise, Alma, and Helen. To cherish his memory, Alonzo leaves his wife of 53 years, Lenora; three children, Dr. Kimberly (David) Greer of Greenville, North Carolina, Yolonda (Douglas) Crim of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Alonzo Keith Carter (Nicole Verdone) of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; three brothers, Alonzo Jessie Carter of Columbus, Ohio, Gene (Yolanda) Carter of Houston, Texas, and Robert Carter of Pikeville, Kentucky; sister Coletta (James) Files of Decatur, Georgia; six grandchildren, Julius Greer, Douglas “DJ”, Alonzo “AJ” and Brianna Crim, Amaya Rakes, and Taylor Carter; sister- and brother-in-law Gwendolyn and Charles Evans of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church family, friends, neighbors, hunting and fishing buddies. He will be greatly missed by all.
