BARBARA ANN FRAZIER YARBOROUGH was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, February 4, 1934, to the union of Lloyd and Ellen Ella (Levy) Frazier. She was the sixth of eight children. Barbara was affectionately nicknamed ‘Barbara Ann’ by her family and ‘Mama Yarborough’ by the community, fellow educators, and students. Barbara was a proud graduate of Columbus East High School. She continued her education and graduated from Capital University, where she earned her degree in education. Barbara’s amazing fifty-seven-year career with Columbus City Schools (formerly Columbus Public Schools) began at Milo Elementary School. She later transferred to Indian Springs Elementary School. She also taught at Monroe Alternative Middle School, Brentnell Alternative Elementary School, Pilgrim Elementary School, and Fifth Avenue Alternative Elementary School. Barbara spent her last years of teaching at Columbus Africentric Early College Elementary School. Barbara was a trailblazer as the first African American teacher to be assigned to a predominately white school in the Columbus system. Barbara was a lifetime member of Trinity Baptist Church. She served in the Music Ministry, taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday school. She also helped with the Children’s Music Ministry at Antioch Baptist Church. She was a member of Lott Carey and the Eastern Union Missionary Baptist Association (E.U.M.B.A.).
