Barbara Jean Sutton

February 21, 1935 — March 31, 2020

Barbara Jean Sutton, 85 years of age, affectionately known as “Babs”, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Tuesday March 31, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was the eldest of four children born to the union of Benjamin Wesley and Fannie Mae Caldwell on February 21,1935. Barbara professed her belief in God and was baptized at the age of 12 by the late Rev. Dr. N L Scarborough at Trinity Baptist Church, Columbus, Ohio. She remained a faithful member for over 70 years. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Hospitality and Missionary Ministries. Barbara was the woman who stole Sylvester (Butch) Sutton’s heart. Barbara and Sylvester were joined in holy matrimony on September 2, 1972. Together, they loved hosting for various family gatherings and went all out for Christmas; decorations in every room and a special Christmas village collection displayed as the focal point. They were inseparable until the time of his passing in October 7, 2018. Barbara joined the Order of Eastern Star Electa Chapter #7 in 1977. She was very active, loved socializing with the sisters and attending all the events. She held several positions; most recently the Grand Court Recorder of Perfect Ashler Grand Court, Heroines of Jericho, State of Ohio and Assistant Recorder of the Grand Council of Courts of Deliberation, Daughters of Sphnix, State of Ohio until the time of her passing. Barbara also served as secretary for the Sutton-Hill and Caldwell family reunion committees. Barbara was an avid bowler and she enjoyed baking desserts of all sorts. She was known for her 7UP pound cake and 7UP salad. Those delightful and delicious treats were an expectation of her from the family for all occasions. Everyone could always count on receiving a greeting card for holidays and a birthday card on their special day. She looked forward to the monthly birthday dinners with her birthday club. Her family and friends surprised her on February 22, 2020 by showing her how much she was loved with a “BIG” Birthday Bash celebrating her life of 85 years. She smiled, laughed, cried, danced in her chair and enjoyed every moment of the celebration. She read every card, every note and talked about the party up until she was not able. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Sylvester Sutton; parents, Benjamin W. and Fannie Mae Caldwell; siblings, Juanita Caldwell and Benjamin J. Caldwell, brothers-in-law, Elmer, Joseph, John Quincy and Chester, Floyd and sisters-in-law, Katherine, Mae Oma, Dorothy, Marie and Patricia.
