Barbara Augusta Roberts Johnson Wood, age ninety-two, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born in Trinidad on Tuesday, March 15, 1932, to Simeon E. Roberts and Beryl Nurse. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Vernon and Glenford Roberts; daughter, Roslyn Wilson; great-grandson, Shevon Williams; god-brother, Marion Willis Jr.; and god-sister, Betty Willis.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Marilyn La Croix, and sons-in-law, Adonis LaCroix (Trinidad) and Earl Wilson (Trinidad). She was a devoted grandmother to Darius Johnson (Trinidad), Russell Wilson (Trinidad), Ryan Wilson (New York), Derron La Croix (Trinidad), Ayana Wilson (Columbus, Ohio), and Adonna-Marie La Croix (Trinidad).

Barbara’s legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Cresha Smart, Kedie Johnson, Narissa Wilson, Ebony Wilson, Rishawn Wilson, Mayah Johnson, Naomi Johnson, and Raphael Johnson (all of Trinidad).

Barbara is also survived by her special niece, Denise Harris; special great-nephew, Antonio Travis; along with cherished friends, Loraine (Dave) Washington, Cora (Latif) Shadi, Tobias (Althea) Houpe, Laura Lassiter, and Thomas (Judy) Wood.

Barbara was the last surviving founding member of the Young At Heart (YAH) book club where she enjoyed lasting friendships with Rosalyn Brown, Jean Tibbs, Linda Beal, Tina Cruder, Deboard Drafton, Pat Mitchell, Loraine Washington, and Jakee Steal. As a founding and devoted member of the Young at Heart (YAH) book club, Barbara also found great joy in discussing literature and engaging in meaningful conversations.

A LIFE OF SERVICE AND DEDICATION

Barbara pursued her passion for healthcare and education, graduating from Kingston-upon-Thames, United Kingdom - School of Nursing in 1966, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Nursing. Barbara later earned her Master of Science degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. 

Barbara’s career took her to England in 1966, where she worked as a midwife and registered nurse at the 48th TAC Hospital (Lakenheath RAF - Royal Air Force) before relocating to the United States in 1968.

After settling in Columbus, Ohio, Barbara dedicated her life to serving others as a registered nurse and licensed social worker (RN-LSW). She made a lasting impact through her work at Netcare Corporation, Nationwide Insurance Company, and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Recovery before retiring in 1998. Barbara was also actively involved in various committees and volunteered tirelessly, demonstrating her deep commitment to community service.

Barbara was a devoted member of the International Black Women’s Congress, where she assisted the president, Dr. Frances Rogers-Rose, in organizing initiatives on critical issues. Her dedication took her across multiple states to attend monthly meetings, where she strengthened the organization’s mission and built deep bonds of sisterhood. Barbara introduced many to the Congress, allowing them to experience the empowerment and community she so cherished. Barbara was also honored to serve as the president of the Columbus chapter, leading local efforts to uplift and support Black women.

A WOMAN OF FAITH AND WISDOM

Barbara was a faithful member of the Southfield Baptist Church, New Journey Christian Ministries, and Shiloh Baptist Church before becoming a devoted member of Faith Ministries Church. She deeply admired her Pastor, Dr. C. Dexter Wise III, and First Lady, Dr. Shirley D. Wise.

Barbara was a dedicated member of Faith Ministries Church’s Seniors Ministry (Senior Celebration), actively joining annual mission trips to the Navajo Reservation; demonstrating her passion for service and outreach. Her favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23.

A LIFE WELL-LIVED

Barbara’s warm smile and kind spirit will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. She had a deep love of reading, often immersing herself in books that broadened her understanding of the world. A devoted fan of Jeopardy! and The Ohio State Football; she rarely missed a game or an opportunity to watch her favorite team.

Barbara found joy in life’s simple pleasures — playing bingo with friends, taking scenic car rides, shopping for little treasures, and dining out at her favorite restaurants. She believed strongly in the power of knowledge and always encouraged others to embrace lifelong learning. Her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support enriched the lives of those around her.

Barbara spent her final days at Brookdale Senior Living, where she formed many treasured friendships.

 Barbara’s legacy of love, laughter, and curiosity will continue to live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those who knew and loved her. Barbara’s life was a testament to her faith, service, and love; and she will be deeply and dearly missed but never forgotten!
