Beatrice “Bea” Flowers passed away November 25, 2019. Bea was a graduate of Columbus Eastmoor High School. She received a B.S in Business Administration and Management and a M.S in Counseling from Suffield University. It was Bea’s calling to work for the State of Ohio in public service. A few of her many duties included being a long time representative for Fiscal Services’ Combined Charitable Campaign and an American Red Cross Disaster Ready Employee. She was also FEMA certified in Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) and was a Medflight Graduate (Emergency Management Agency) as a traffic controller. In addition to these accomplishments, she received a number of certifications through her employment with the State. Bea was a member of AFSCME Local 11 and AFL-CIO. She was a Union Representative and District 6 Delegate for the OCSEA BMV Chapter 2505, a member of The A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI - an African American organization for trade unionists) and The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU). Bea served as Chaplain of the Mt. Vernon AME Wayman Guild Club. Bea enjoyed helping her community with her primary focus being Arts/Culture, Child Advocacy, Civil Rights/Social Action, Economic Empowerment, Education and Politics. She volunteered to supervise kettle ringers for the Salvation Army and completed mediation training with the Franklin County Domestic and Juvenile Court. She was honored to be a 2016 member of WHO’s WHO of African Americans. Bea was an avid traveler – frequently visiting friends and family around the globe. She was able to enjoy her passion for traveling by being a Cruise Sponsor with First Fridays of Columbus, Ohio for many years. She was a long-time book club member and authored poems and short stories under the penname “Simply Beatrice.” She adored her nephews “Jor-Jor” and “Wookie” and was simply the best Auntie ever! Her motto was “Live Your Life Helping Others.” Bea was preceded in death by loving parents Allease and Easrean Flowers. She is survived by sister Janice M. Flowers, Esq. of Columbus, Ohio; nephews Jordan L. Flowers of Columbus, Ohio and Justin A. Akindele of Cincinnati, Ohio; Uncles Walathal Weems (L. Ophelia) of Columbus, Ohio and Dr. Larry Sims (Kimberly Sims, Esq.) of Memphis, Tennessee; Aunts Jessie B Smith (Leroy) of Detroit Michigan, Maxine Little (Howard) of Brentwood California, Emma Jean Jackson of Holly Grove, Arkansas, Susie Sutton of Chicago, Illinois, Mary Grant (Nathaniel) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Earnestine Grant of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; trusted friend Richard A. Nelson of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of cousins and friends.
