Bertha Mae (Scott) Hawkins

November 29, 1933 — July 12, 2013

Bertha Mae (Scott) Hawkins went home to be with our Lord on Friday, July 12, 2013 surrounded by her loving children. Born in McCormick S.C. in 1933, she had been a resident of Columbus, Ohio since May, 2000. Previously, she lived in Greensboro N.C. and Washington D.C., where she lovingly raised her family. She retired from Burlington Industries as a Lab Technician. Bertha dedicated her life to raising her 6 children and touching the lives of her 26 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid reader and collector of books, especially by Stephen King and Dean Koontz. As a mother and a friend, Bertha was known best for her quick wit and wise counsel. She was preceded in death by husband, Paul D. Hawkins Sr.; mother, Josephine S. Alston; step-father, William Alston; brother, O’Neil Searles; and father, Andrew Searles. Surviving relatives include sons, Phillip J. (Tonya) Hawkins of Greensboro N.C.; Paul David (Danielle) Hawkins Jr., of Raleigh N.C.; Kurtis W. (Jewel) Scott, of Hampton VA; and Keith T. (Margaret) Scott, of Greensboro; daughters, Tracy A. Scott, of Fuquay Varina N.C., and Donna A. Scott (Larry) James of Columbus Ohio; brother, W. T. (Shirley) Searles, of Cleveland Ohio; sister, Donna Alston (Jay) Williams, of Greensboro N.C.; uncle and aunt, William and Carrie Ford, of Columbus, Ohio; 26 grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
