BETSY CHRISTINE SHY-BLACKSHEAR, beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at OSU East Hospital. Born on Saturday, November 22, 1969, Betsy’s life was a testament to love, joy, and caring for those around her. Her infectious laughter and radiant smile brightened the lives of everyone she touched.


Betsy’s role as a stay-at-home mother was a cornerstone of her life. She found fulfillment in being present for her family, nurturing her children, and creating a warm and welcoming home. Beyond her role as a mother, Betsy was also a certified court reporter, showcasing her dedication and versatility.


Known for her warmth and compassion, Betsy was an exceptional mother to her children: Harmonie (Zackery Horton), Latasha (Ricardo McGhee), Christopher (Heather Portman), Dayvon, Kevin, Shy’Anne, and David Slaughter. Her legacy extended to her grandchildren: Zackeriah, Hezekiah, Nehemiah, Je’Siah, Y’vette, Vivian, Denise, Christopher Jr., Hayden, Elijah, Luna, Christina, and Jaden. Betsy’s nurturing spirit lives on in the hearts of her family.


In addition to her devotion to her family, Betsy was a source of strength and support for her extended family. Her home was a gathering place for joyous family functions, where she cherished the opportunity to create special memories. Her homemade Easter baskets, crafted with love, reflected her dedication to making every moment memorable.


Betsy’s warmth extended to her siblings: Victoria Lynn Shy (Edward Fisher), Jennifer, Raymond Victory Shy Jr. (Linda Carrington) / (former Debbie Shy), and Willie Jackson Shy (fiancée Kristie). Her father, Raymond Victory Shy, Sr. (Laverne Shy), held a special place in her heart. Betsy’s family included not only those connected by blood but also her in-laws: Debra Gore, Diana Roddy, Karen Blackshear, Sonya (Nate) Collins, and Teresa (Steven) Taylor.


Betsy was predeceased by her mother, Laveda Sharon Shy; her sister, Yavetta Marie Blair; her brother, Aaron Shy; and her nephew, John D. Swan. Their memories remain intertwined with the love she shared.


Betsy’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to family. Her joyful spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those fortunate to have known her.


As we mourn her passing, let us remember Betsy for the love she gave, the laughter she shared, and the indelible mark she left on our lives. She will be greatly missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
