Betty Jane Mahan was born on June 3, 1929, in Champaign, Illinois to the late Milton and Mary Edith Scott. She was raised in Columbus, Ohio and has been a resident for 77 years. A loving mother to her son, Mark. They bonded early in Mark’s young life by going downtown shopping, ending up at Woolworth’s for milkshakes, “if Mark was good.” She loved her nieces and nephews, her mother, Mary, sister, Mildred and brothers Nate and David. A 1947 graduate of Central High School, she also attended Bliss College. She worked all her adult life in public service, including the Attorney General’s Office, Governor’s Office, City of Columbus Department of Safety and Franklin County Republican Party. She was an avid voter and worked the polls for many years. She never met a stranger, she had friends in all walks of life, and she raised her son with similar values. Betty touched many lives in 81 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Milton Scott; mother, Mary Edith Scott; brother, Nathaniel Scott; sister, Mildred Mizelle and former husband, Roy Mahan Jr. On Sunday, November 21, 2010, Betty departed this life at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She leaves to celebrate her life and memory, son, Mark Mahan; brother, David Scott; 23 nieces and nephews and other loving relatives and dear friends.
