Charles Anthony Truitt

May 27, 1955 — May 3, 2020

Charles was born May 27, 1955, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the youngest of ten children, born to his beloved parents, the late Irene Hoskins Truitt and Ulysses Truitt, Sr. God called Charles home on May 3, 2020, at the age of 64. Charles grew up in Memphis and attended Melrose School along with his siblings and friends. He loved sports and played basketball in junior high. Charles's parents were charter members of Beulah Baptist Church, where Charles and his siblings attended every Sunday. He remained a member until his death. His older brother, Ulysses, Jr., still attends Beulah Baptist Church. Charles continued through life to read his Bible and always wore his gold crucifix He had a charitable heart and would help anyone. In 1984, Charles was employed by Federal Express (FedEx) in Memphis and transferred to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Later, Charles transferred to FedEx Metro Plex in Newark, New Jersey, where he would live the remainder of his life. He was also employed by Brinks Security as a driver. Charles would share stories of New York City with his sister "Net" (Sylvia) - how it was located just across the Hudson River from his home, with many modes of transportation available for a visit. He retold stories of how the city was noisy and busy, with people everywhere and so much to see and do, both day and night. The lights were so bright at night it seemed like day. He would remark about the beautiful churches (to view and attend); libraries (he loved to read); museums (he loved learning experiences); college and professional sports (he was an avid sports fan); clothing stores (he was an impeccable dresser); Broadway shows (he attended many); a variety of restaurants (he was a vegetarian and loved to cook); stock market (he was intrigued and learned the process, but never invested). Charles would return to the serenity of his apartment and would tell anyone that this was a wonderful life. He loved and enjoyed New York, noting, "New York, New York - the city so nice, they named it twice." However, with the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, Charles wondered how the city would recover and if it would ever be the same. Charles was very tall, physically fit, handsome and intelligent. He loved music and was a smooth dancer. People would take notice of him when he walked into a room. He had a hearty laugh but was a loving, quiet, exceptionally soft-spoken person. Even if correcting someone, he would say, "Why did you do that...you can and must do better." Charles was a gentle giant who believed that everyone should read for knowledge and use one's intellect when speaking or writing. He was well-read and wrote journals on both his personal life and a variety of topics. He was also a health expert on food and exercise. We, the family of Charles, pray that this obituary will illustrate for you how fulfilled Charles was in his life. We will miss him greatly. His death was sudden and unexpected, but Charles would tell each one to "love and serve the Lord. Be sure your SOUL is SAVED. Death can come sudden and unexpected, I know. I love you." Charles is preceded in death by mother, Irene Hoskins Truitt and father, Ulysses Truitt, Sr.; sister, Beverly Ann; brothers, George David, James Oscar ("Billy") and Ronald Leon Truitt. Charles will be greatly missed by brothers Ulysses, Jr. (Juanita) of Memphis, TN, and Benjamin (Laura) of Louisville, KY; sisters, Mary Louise Truitt Smith of Cleveland, OH, Annie Lois (Ronnie) White of Columbus, OH, and Sylvia ("Net") Truitt Sharp of Columbus, OH. Charles will be fondly remembered by his nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives
