Charlie White Sr

January 18, 1924 — June 2, 2011

Charlie Claiborne White was born January 18, 1924 in Chatham, VA; to the late Annie Maude Smith-White Claiborne White. He departed this earthly life on June 2, 2011 in Regency Manor Nursing Home, Columbus, Ohio. Charlie served in the US Army during WWII, where he received several honors including a Purple Heart for being wounded during the war. After severing his county valiantly, he returned to Danville, VA where he met his wife of 61 years Gracie E. Small-White. From this union they were blessed with three children; Jerry L. White, Gracie M. White and Charlie C. White Jr. Additionally, Charlie assumed responsibility for his wife’s two children from a previous marriage; Luther T. Craft and Novella Craft. Charlie worked many jobs in the City of Danville, but finally retired during the summer of 1986 from Thompson Ready Mix after several years of service. During his retired time Charlie loved working around the house and spending time with his family. In fact one of Charlie’s favorite saying was “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. Charlie submitted his life to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in his latter years and was a member of the Bible Way Church Danville, VA., where served as an Usher. Charlie was preceded in death by his mother Annie Maude White and father Claiborne White; three sisters Violet White, Mary Emma Hampton and Lillie C. Oliver; two brothers Edward White and Mathew Lee White Sr. and his loving wife Gracie E. White. Those left to celebrate his memory, brother, Albert T. White (Maggie White) and sister Annie Elizabeth Bachelor (George Bachelor); two sons Jerry L. White (Judith White) and Charlie C. White Jr. (Mary White); one daughter Gracie M. White-Tyree (Edward Tyree) and two stepchildren Luther T. Craft and Novella Craft-Corneillie (Mark Corneillie); twelve grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
