Cozine A. Short 1935 – 2017 The sunrise for Cozine Alice Short began on January 8, 1935 when she was born to the late Anator and Ina Fern White Hereford in Columbus, Ohio. At an early age, Cozine accepted Christ at Hosack Baptist Church on the Southside of Columbus. Cozine attended Columbus Public Schools and was a 1953 graduate of South High School. She was a certified Surgical Technician and received her License Practical Nurse certification (L.P.N.) from the Springfield (Ohio) School of Nursing in 1957. On June 18, 1960, Cozine was united in Holy Matrimony to Robert E. Short, a union that would last 57 years. Cozine and Robert were blessed with three wonderful children, one daughter Mitzi; and two sons, Mark and Montague. After marrying, Cozine joined Mt. Olivet Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a member for 50+years. She was a member of the Deaconess Board from (1964-68) and cherished her involvement with the Clothing Bank, Food Pantry, and Health Wellness Ministries. Cozine had a heart for helping people and this was evident in the way she lived her life. She began a long and productive career at Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she worked for 48 years. Her years of service was recognized by the hospital that cited her in an article stating: “Cozine has the important job of providing information to the parents and families regarding their child’s pending surgical experience. After all of these years at the hospital, she still rises to the call, remains cheerful towards patients and families, and deserves credit for helping others. We can’t say thanks to Cozine often enough!” She loved her profession and spent many years as a member of the Ohio License Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) Association. In 1995, she chaired The Ohio L.P.N. Convention and in 1996 she was recognized as L.P.N. of the Year. In addition to caring for patients at the hospital for over four decades, Cozine served God in the community in many ways. She was heavily involved in the Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) and was President of the Fairwood Elementary School PTA. Her interest in helping Seniors inspired her to create and lead The Oakfield Enrichment Center—a Senior Adult Day Care Center that opened in 1985 and the Senior Pals Outreach Ministry at Isabel Ridgeway, which was established several years later. Cozine really enjoyed spending time with family and friends. To stay connected and in fellowship with her childhood friends, she co-founded the Blessed Ladies of the Southside. She was an expert at planning family vacations and loved traveling the U.S. and throughout the world with her husband Robert and family. Some of her favorite travel locations included Mazatlán, Mexico; Israel (Holy Land); Egypt; Greece; China; Rome, Italy; France; and Australia. Cozine was indeed a “Silent Angel” in our midst and her works reflect a life of service to others. She departed this life on Sunday, August 27, 2017, after battling illness for more than a year. Robert was a faithful primary caregiver throughout her illness until she transitioned to her heavenly home. To cherish her loving memory and legacy, Cozine leaves her devoted husband, Robert E. Short; her children: daughter, Mitzi Short of Oak Park, IL; sons, Mark Short (Angela) of Indianapolis, IN, and Montague Short (Terrilynn) of Oak Park, IL; four grandsons, Marcus Short, Marshawn Short, Malcolm Short and Langston Short; brother, David J. White, Sr.; step-brother, Wesley Hereford; step-sister, Jackie Hereford; sisters-in-law, Patricia White, Wanda Cain, and Barbara Hereford; step-brother, Wesley Hereford; her lifelong childhood friend, Ann Cook Willis, who is like a family member; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Cozine was preceded in death by her parents, Anator and Ina White Hereford; step-father, Dudley Hereford, Sr.; sister, Alma Reeves; brothers, Alfred White and Norman White; and step-brothers, Dudley Hereford, Jr. and Steve Hereford.
