Damon Jacques Russell was born August 23, 1973 in Lima, Ohio, and raised in LaPlace, Louisiana. While in Louisiana, Damon attended Southern University. He served in the United States Army, from 1993 to 1996, and was granted an honorable discharge. He relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated from the Ohio Media School. For the past 21 years, Damon has been a dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service. During the course of his career, he was recognized by the post office as a recipient of their “Altruism Award.” His selflessness was also evident in the time he spent coaching youth athletics, including the Columbus Gators football team and boxing at Beatty Recreation Center in Columbus. Damon enjoyed all sports; however, he was a diehard Saints fan. Damon had a special, lifelong passion for music as well. He grew up watching Michael Jackson in The Wiz, and every morning, he was known to sing one of his favorite songs, “Ain’t No Need To Worry” by Anita Baker and The Winans. Over the years, Damon developed a keen interest in jazz music. As a local DJ and podcast host, Damon was known to many friends and loved ones by his nickname “Russ Dogg.” On Saturday, April 21, 2018, Damon passed away while at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. His mother, Catherine Russell-Sanders, preceded him in death. Damon is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Tomecca L. Russell; sons, Tremain “Trey” Russell and Damonjah “DJ” Russell; daughter TaMarra Clary-Russell, all of Columbus; father Cornell (Sherry) Cole of LaPlace; cherished granddaughter Laila Russell; brother Scott (Lisa) Moore; stepbrother Brian Gray; stepsisters, Ashley (Rasi) Calvin and Kingi (Bernard) Jackson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
