Daniel Carey Brown, 33, passed away on August 17, 2017. A lawyer, Daniel worked for the firm of Crabbe, Brown James in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to that, Daniel served as a law clerk for the Honorable Algenon L. Marbley of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Daniel was born on June 11, 1984, and raised primarily in Lodi, California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a B.A. in Classics in 2007. Daniel thrived in academia, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with Highest Distinction. While at Berkeley, he spent a semester studying abroad in Greece and Turkey and participated in the University Chorus as a First Bass. Daniel subsequently worked for three years as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, a position that, people who knew him would not be surprised to find, synergized well with his friendly, caring demeanor and quick wit. Daniel went on to Stanford Law School where he served as Social Chair—another befitting assignment—for Stanford OUTLAW, as well as Outreach Chair for the Stanford Black Law Students Association. He graduated with a J.D. in 2013. Daniel was a fervent social justice advocate. After law school, he spent a year representing indigent criminal defendants as a Stanford Law School Criminal Defense Fellow for The Three Strikes Project. He was also an excellent listener, grateful mentee, and dedicatedly loyal nephew, brother and friend. His acerbic one-liners, mini-crossword solving abilities and 90s hip-hop knowledge were second to none. He will be sorely missed by family, friends, colleagues, teachers, and employers alike. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 22 at 4 p.m. at the Joseph P. Kinneary U.S. Courthouse, 85 Marconi Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio 43215, Room 331.
