Dawn (Blocker) Miller

April 25, 1959 — November 10, 2012

With great joy and anticipation, Freddie and Louise Blocker welcomed their first born child, Dawn Louise. She entered this world on April 25, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York. An inquisitive soul, Dawn observed, appreciated, and sought knowledge. She never tired of acquiring information about others and the world around her; therefore, young Dawn constantly read and studied people. Dawn loved to share with others and began to demonstrate that love and compassion when, at the tender age of 10, with her hand firmly holding his, she brought into our family a beautiful child, Michael, who would become another brother, and introduced him by saying, “Mommy, he needs a mother.” Dawn began her primary school education in Queens, where she attended Christ the King School during her elementary years. She later studied at Saint Francis Preparatory School and, at the age of 16, she earned her diploma from Kingston High School. A creative spirit, Dawn found pleasure in sharing her gifts through crafting, dance, writing and poetry. She was humbled and honored to have seen her written works published. With a love of children and community, Dawn facilitated various children’s programs with a focus on literacy and crafts in the Queens Public Library. She took great pride in her contribution to the development, implementation and operation of a major GED testing center. She spent many happy hours mentoring the young dancers in her lively, energetic, and competitive dance troupe. Dawn loved it all—she loved her family, friends, the community’s children, and especially her brother Paul, for always being there for her. It meant a lot to her. A beloved mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, niece, cousin, and friend, Dawn returned home to rest in the arms of her Heavenly Father on Saturday, November 10, 2012 in Columbus, Ohio. She was predeceased by her father, Freddie, brothers, Tracey and Michael, sister Marilyn, grandmother Frances, and her infant grandson. Dawn Louise Blocker Miller leaves to celebrate her life, daughters, Thyais Michelle, Akita Toni, and Imani Damichi; mother Louise Gibbons Blocker; grandchildren, Chimaya, Precious, Cardin, Essence, Korin, Pierre, Jasmine, Isabelle, Julian, Shareem, Promise and Sasha; sisters Angel and Felice; brother Paul; uncles William and Godfrey; and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends. We will miss you and your smile, Dawn, and we will always love, cherish, and remember you.
