Deacon Charlie Green

December 6, 1939 — July 14, 2014

Charlie L. Green, 74, of Columbus, Ohio answered His Father’s call at 1:47 AM on Monday, July 14, 2014 in Grant Hospital. After a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease, Charlie finally succumbed to the effects of the disease. Charlie was born on Friday, December 6, 1939 to the late Willietta (Ezell) and Chollie B. Green of Loachatoka, Alabama. The family relocated to Florida when Charlie was three and then to Columbus, Ohio at the tender age of age of five. Charlie attended Columbus City Schools where he graduated from East High School in 1957. While visiting Ms. Carolyn A. Pack, Charlie proposed to her. After several years of the watchful courting eyes of Carolyn’s parents, Mr. Pack gave Charlie permission to marry Carolyn. They were married on Saturday, April 29, 1961 at the Hilltop Methodist Church. To this union two sons were born, Craig E. Green, Esq., (Valerie Thomas, mother of Chloe and Collin Thomas-Green) of Northfield, Minnesota and Carlton A. (Casandra) Green, parents of Charisse and Christopher Green of Granville, Ohio. The young couple and their two sons lived on DePorres Drive in north Columbus until after the boys were grown. Charlie worked in a factory and then at TWA as a ramp serviceman for 35 years. Soon after retiring from TWA, Charlie was employed for a short time by the City of Columbus in custodial services. Charlie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend to many. Known for his flair for ties and pocket squares, many admired his flamboyant style. Charlie loved nice cars, traveling, bowling, gospel music and art. He often created designs for his garage door throughout his lifetime. Charlie also served as the Past Worshipful Master of Gloria Lodge #89. Charlie enjoyed having family gatherings and worshiping the Lord. Later in life Charlie accepted another call as Deacon at Second Community Church in 1981. Later, in 1995, he and Carolyn would move their membership to New Salem Missionary Baptist Church under the watchful eye of Reverend Dr. Keith A. Troy. Until he was no longer able to serve, Charlie served faithfully as Deacon, and Food Pantry Worker at New Salem. Charlie is survived by his lovely wife of 53 years, Carolyn; the one he often referred to as his angel. He also leaves to celebrate his life two sons, Craig E. and Carlton A.(Casandra) Green, four grandchildren, Charisse and Christopher Green, Chloe and Collin Thomas-Green, Valerie Thomas, mother of Chloe and Collin Thomas-Green, one brother, Phil Green of Los Angeles, California, sisters, Mary (James) Humphy, Ruth Thompson of Columbus, Ohio, sisters-in-law, Shirley I. (Pack) Watkins, Martha L. Pack, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, many of Columbus, Ohio. Life Celebration Services will take place on Friday, July 18 at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 2956 Cleveland Avenue, Reverend Dr. Keith A. Troy, officiating. Viewing will be from 10-12 noon and services will begin at noon. Interment will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be given to the National Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in memory of Charlie.
