Dolores Payne

January 20, 1937 — December 29, 2023

Dolores Jane Payne

While passing on December 29, 2023, she is blessed with longevity at the age of 86. Dolores resided in Columbus and grew up in the near east side in Eastgate with parents, Douglas “Sonny” Payne and Margaret “Maggie” Payne. She attended East and Central High Schools. She was the first in her family to attend Ohio State University to attain a degree in Social Work. She enjoyed working for Franklin County Jobs and Family Services for 30 years as a social worker in the Columbus Community helping and supporting families and children in need. Furthermore, she was a foster parent to many children while bringing up and supporting her own three kids. She helped all to attain a college education or working in a trade to make an honest living. She was strong, courageous, and had faith in God and taught the children to be also. After retirement from social work, she continued to work part time at the Friendship Village Retirement Community for many years greeting people as an receptionist.

Christmas and Thanksgiving were her favorite times of the year. She loved the Fall with the leaves turning colors, and snow in the Winter; she especially loved the Christmas decorations and lights. She loved planting and gardening in the Spring. Her favorite flowers were Marigolds and Roses. She loved the family outings and cook-outs and fireworks in Summer. She especially enjoyed trips to the Columbus Zoo and going to the Ohio Stair Fair. She enjoyed traveling to such places as California, Chicago, New York City, Germany, Paris and especially Las Vegas (She would win a lot!) as among many other places. She loved dogs. She often talked about her dog, Buck, growing up as a kid; she would talk about Buck leading the way to her grandma Hanna’s house. She loved Pepper, our German Shepherd, protecting our house. She saved a couple like Coco (the terrier and truly a terror) and little Nyla from the pound. She loved her grandma Hanna so much.

Dolores is preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Payne and Margaret Payne; her brothers, Douglas Payne Jr , Robert Moore, and sister, Darryl Anne Smith (Payne).

She is survived by her children, Brent Payne, Belinda Gaye Spruill (Payne), Corey Douglas Payne and wife Monika Payne; brother, William Moore; grandsons, Shawn Spruill and Corey Immanuel Payne; and great granddaughter, Madilynne McKay and many more family and friends.

Bless her soul and them all.
