Doris Anne Foster was born January 14, 1933 to Willie Henrietta Porterfield Foster and Walter Frank Foster in Columbus, Ohio. At the age of 3 she was given to her Aunt Agnes and Uncle William H. Graham to raise as their own. She lived a happy life with her adoptive parents. When her aunt died in 1945 she was taken from her uncle by the courts and given to her grandmother, Zozie Wells. She attended Douglas Elementary School, Franklin Jr High and Champion Jr High where she met her husband, Otis Ray who helped her with trumpet lessons. They played in the East High School Band together. They were married in 1948. To this union were born four children: son, Otis Wesley and daughters, Alicia Marie, Jacqueline Jeanne and Billie. At an early age Doris attended Bethany Presbyterian Church under Reverend W. Holloway. As a teen she was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church by James Parrish. She joined Second Community Church in 1961 where she served in numerous capacities over the years including Asst. Church Clerk, President of the Altar Guild, Financial Secretary, the first female Trustee, Usher, Women’s Christian Fellowship, President of the Temple Inspirational Choir, Chancel Choir, Mass Choir, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Courtesy Committee, President of Ohio Fellowship of International Council of Community Churches. Doris loved music and had been a member of: Shiloh Baptist Church Gospel Choir, DCSC Choir, United Inspirational Quire (UIQ), Dennis H Freeman (DHF) Community Choir, Love Choir, Temple Inspirational Mass and Chancel Choir of Second Community Church, Paul Lawrence Dunbar Afro American Concert Choir, Original member of the Ara Arnold Chorus affiliated with the National Association of Negro Musicians. Doris retired from DCSC after 32 years of service receiving the Distinguished Career Award. She was a supervisor in the Emergency Supply Operations Center, secretary of the Civilian Welfare Council of DCSC and was President of the DCSC Choir. She received many certificates of awards including Outstanding and Sustained Superior Performance. She was the first employee to receive the Employee of the Month in the Supply Operations Division. Doris was also actively involved in her community where she was a lifetime member of Church Women United, The Hilltop Civic Council and Operation Push. She was Girl Scout Leader of Troop 503 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Founding Member of Traynor Halfway House, Booster Board Member for The Westside Chargers and West Mound Stars Football Organizations, Volunteer at St Anthony/Park Medical Hospital, Board Member of America Cancer Society and member of City Association of Widows.
