Doris Iola Card

July 18, 1921 — July 17, 2013

Doris Iola Card, age 91, passed away July 17, 2013 at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was born July 18, 1921 in Monroe, Georgia to Wardelless and Mamie (Thompson) Floyd. Her family moved to Macon, Georgia, where Doris attended Lizzieboro Missionary Baptist Church. Doris met Herman Card, whom she married and later divorced after moving to Cleveland, Ohio. They had a daughter, Dorothy Delores, whom Doris dearly loved. Doris was a charter member of Greater Abyssina Baptist Church and sang in their gospel choir for years. She went to school for nursing and cosmetology. After receiving her beautician’s license, Doris worked in a local salon before opening her own business, Paragon Beauty Salon on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland. She conducted several Miss Black Ohio Beauty Pageants and style shows in both Cleveland and Columbus. Doris held the title of President of the Ohio Beauticians Association for several years. She assisted in the Carl Stokes campaign, was an appraiser for the City of Cleveland, and owned several rental properties. Doris was instrumental the education of both her daughter, Dorothy, and her young client, Rose. Dorothy became a principal and was later diagnosed with cancer. Doris used her nursing skills to care for Dorothy until her death. She also cared for elderly clients, often going to their homes to provide service. After retiring and selling her salon, Doris joined her sister, Gladys Young, in visiting and assisting family members. After the deaths of her daughter and her sister, Gladys, Doris fought the battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2006, she came to live with her niece, Joyce Thomas, in Columbus. She died one day before her 92nd birthday. With her passing, Doris leaves many memories for her sister Cora Floyd Williams of Macon, Georgia; brother Willie Johnson of Macon, Georgia; sister-in-law Marjorie Card of Chesapeake, Virginia; son-in-law Bill Johnson of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; special daughter Rose Garnett of Garfield Heights, Ohio; nieces, Joyce A. Young Thomas, Janette Young, Jeaniece (Arthur) Brown, Margaret Young, Patsy Pierce Copeley, Patricia Stephens, Ernestine Adkins, Renee (Ricky) Smith, and Darlene (Gus) Griffin, nephews, John (Delores) Young, Steve Floyd, and Howard Floyd; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.” ~ John 14:27
