Doris Mcgowan

December 29, 1932 — March 23, 2024

Doris Jean Davis Butler McGowan also known as “Mom, Doris Day, Lady Di and Dot” was born December 29, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama to the union of Sterling F. Davis Sr. and Corine Huston Davis.


After moving to Columbus, Ohio she attended the Columbus Public School System and graduated from East High School.


In her 30s and 50s she became popular for bar-tending. For six years she had a annual BBQ called her “White Party” which grew in large numbers every year. She loved sewing and made many unique pieces. She

always displayed a bubbly personality with an infectious smile. Doris was a disciple of the Refuge Missionary Baptist Church, which she loved attending when she was able to do so. Doris loved her family and a few of her memorable moments was when she rode the Greyhound Bus to South Carolina to see her first set of twin grand babies born; and when her grandson took her to Niagara Falls and lastly when the family took her on a cruise to the Bahamas.


Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Sterling F. Davis, Sr. and Corine Davis; husband, Jerry Carl McGowan; son, Sterling Foster Davis, Jr.; sisters, Sally Irene Davis-Williams and Barbara Jean Davis-Loggans; brother, Ronald H. Colbert; granddaughter, Bennay Butler and grandson, Pauly Davis.


She leaves to cherish her memory: children, Renee (Bennie T.) Butler Price; Tanya (Angelo) Butler Lee, Sabrina Butler, Craigen McGowan Dowell; grandchildren, Sukia Williams, whom she raised (3 children), Shawn Butler, whom she raised (2 children), Carlota (2 children), Tonshal (4 children), Ratasha Butler (2 children), Diamondo Butler (1 child), James Chandler (4 children), Tyana Butler (1 child), Dior Simpson (1 child), Kelaija Berry (4 children); Kurt Berry, Jr. (2 children); many other relatives and friends.
