Dorothy Elizabeth (Johnson) Tyler, 99, of Columbus, formerly of Powell, OH, departed this life to go to her creator, March 12, 2014. She passed away, at her place of residence for the last 5 1/2 years, The Woodlands of Columbus.” Dorothy was born April 21, 1914 in Athens, OH to the late Hattie (Hawks) and Samuel Johnson. She had two older sisters, one who died at age 12. Her Mother died when she was 6 years old, and her Father when she was just 6 months old. She and her oldest sister were brought to Columbus and raised by her Mother's oldest sister, her daughter and son-in-law. She attended Columbus Public Schools. After graduating from Franklin Jr. High school, which was then the old East High school, she attended the newly built East High School, graduating in 1933. Upon graduating, she attended OSU briefly. Married at 21, she and her husband Paul started a family, establishing a home on Columbus' southeast side for the next 20 years. They were eventually forced to move from their Columbus home (settling in Powell, OH) due to the new freeway (their existing home sat squarely on the 1-70/71 split). They lived in Powell for the next 40 years in the house her husband and son built. Her early employment included being a hair stylist and working at the Maramour Restaurant. In later years, after raising three children, she returned to work at Lazarus and the State of Ohio, in the Bureau of workman's compensation, from which she retired after 13 years. Dorothy's activities included being an active long time member of the Dublin based social group Who's Who. After the passing of her husband of 65 years in 2000, she moved back to Columbus and became an active member of the Bexley Activity Club. As the years went by, her children decided that she should live where she could receive proper care, protection and remain active. Thus, the Woodlands was selected as her last residence, a place where she experienced great quality of life, joy and much love. In earlier times she was a member of Second Baptist Church, and for a brief period a Sunday School Teacher. Then, for a number of years she and her husband did not attend church, one reason being, was the onset of his problems with dementia. However, again with her husband's passing, she knew she should not forsake the assembling of herself with those of like mind in the Lord. So she returned to church, but to a different congregation, Asbury North United Methodist Church. It was a blessing and she was so happy to be a member of Asbury, where she was involved in the United Methodist Women and an active participant in Reverend Lynn's Bible class. Dorothy's favorite expression was God Be With You, an expression she would use frequently, especially as she ended a call or you left her residence. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Paul Tyler Jr.; sisters, Ruth Patterson and Mildred Johnson; and great-grandaughter, Kiara Tyler. She leaves to celebrate her life: daughters, Emily (Don) Mixon and Paula (Victor) Gay, and son, David Tyler; grandchildren Gary (Toya) Tyler, Kevin Tyler, Donald (Niqui) Mixon II, Kimberly Lytle, Karla Mixon, Eric (Gina) Gay, Jeremy Gay and Paul (Shirron) Gay; great-grandchildren Maya and Rashaad Tyler, Tyler Lytle, Gary Jr. and Arielle Tyler, Aleisha and Scott Bonner, and Jazmine Gay; great great-grandchild Garryn Bonner; nieces Beverly McCoy and Joan Patterson, great nieces and many friends, especially her late-in-life adopted daughters Bridget Williams and Blanche Collins.
