Dr. Evelyn Luckey

April 30, 1926 — July 23, 2022

Dr Evelyn Foreman Luckey of Columbus, Ohio, entered her eternal rest on July 23, 2022. She was born on April 30,1926 to Arthur R Foreman and Agnes H. Foreman, in Bellefonte, PA. Her family moved to Youngstown, OH in the early 1940’s in search of work. She attended Wilberforce University before transferring to the Ohio State University. Dr. Luckey earned a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Degree in psychology and English. In 1950 she obtained a Master of Arts in English and in 1970, a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and instruction all from Ohio State University. She was a public-school teacher from 1957 to 1967, and assistant school superintendent 1977 – 1990. Dr Luckey was the first African American woman trustee of the Columbus Metropolitan Library 1973 -1988 and the first African American woman board president in 1985. Dr Luckey was often described as a Vanguard. She was a member of St Paul AME Church, where she served in various capacities; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Twin River (OH) Chapter of the Links. Dr Luckey was a devoted Mother, Sister, and Aunt to her family. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer A Luckey and Carolyn S Luckey of Columbus, OH. Sisters, Phyllis Lawhorn of Atlanta, GA, Carol Oliver, Stone Mountain, GA, Sylvia Beverly of Decatur, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Lunch Bunch, a 501c3 organization that awards scholarships to qualified African American students graduating from Columbus City Schools www.helenjenkinsdavisscholarshop.org. or St Paul A.M.E. Church.

A memorial celebration will be held on September 18, 2022.
