Ellen D. Hairston

Ellen D. Hairston, age 83 of Columbus, went home to be with the Lord, February 10, 2011. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sandy and Ada Leftwich, husband of 50 years, Thomas E. Hairston, and granddaughter, Elita Michelle King. Ellen D. Hairston was born January 6, 1928 in Rand, West Virginia to the late Sandy and Ada Leftwich. She was the oldest of eight children and was a protective big sister to her six brothers and one sister. She attended public schools in Rand and Charleston, West Virginia and graduated from Gamet High school in 1946. Ellen married her beloved husband, the late Thomas Edward Hairston in 1949. The couple had three children: Deborah Morris, Sandra (Ronald) Williamson, and Monica Bates; grandchildren, Felicia Ferguson, Carolyn King, Vanya Hairston, Brandy Hairston, Thomas Hairston and three great-grandchildren. Ellen was an avid bowler for many years, participating in various bowling leagues at Piketon Lanes, Eastland Lanes, and Holiday Lanes. She was a member of a Pokeno Club for many years and held the office of Treasurer. Ellen was a wife, a loving mother, grandmother, homemaker, and a great cook. She will be dearly missed by her family and always remembered for her devotion to family, generosity, and kindness. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children; grandchildren; sister, Norma (Phillip) Jones, of Charleston, WV; brothers, Sandy of New Jersey; Matthew and Louis Leftwich, of Charleston, WV and Arthur (Marilyn) Leftwich, of White Sulphur Springs, WV.
