Ernestine G. Johnson

Ernestine Garrett Walker Johnson, “Peachie Pie” was born in Huntington, West Virginia on June 22, 1927 to the late James and Vera Walker. She graduated from Douglas High School. She worked as a matron and supervisor at Columbus State Institute, Behavior Modification. She developed expertise in the area of behavior shaping. She retired from Doctors North Hospital as a Nurses’ Technician. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a former member of Grace Baptist Church and a current member of Jerusalem Baptist Church; where she sang in the choir. Ernestine loved traveling and singing. She once had the opportunity to travel and sing with Mahalia Jackson; an idea that her mother said “No”!! She was united in holy matrimony to the late Marion Johnson. A union that lasted 50 years. A devoted mother of three, she was also a loving grandmother, mother-in-law and an excellent backseat driver. Ernestine loved cooking new recipes and loved to do crossword puzzles. One of her final happy occasions was her surprise 84th birthday celebration; where her girlfriends gathered around the table. She was speechless. Other happy times were when she, Dad, Michael, Marion and Shelly would gather together on Christmas mornings (memories we will always cherish). Ernestine went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Johnson; son, Michael Johnson and parents, James and Vera Walker. She will be deeply missed by her children, Marion (Carmella) Johnson and Michel (Eddie) Joyce; brother, James (Mollie) Walker; 9 grandchildren, Amanda and Michael, of Texas, Mercedez, Jazmine, Michelle, Mychael, Henry and Carmella of Ohio and Timothy, an Army MP - Ft. Hood; 8 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; sister and brother-in-law; and best friend, Mary Jane Floyd.
