Evernola "Evie" Spikener Shivers, 85, of Powell, OH passed into God's presence on August 22, 2021. Evie was born November 11, 1935 in Batesville, MS to Ernestine Spikener (née Jennings) and Leroy Spikener. Evie lived in Batesville until the age of seven when her father left the area and moved to Los Angeles, CA for work in the Long Beach shipyard bringing her and her mother in 1944. Evie attended Ascot Elementary School, Carver Junior High and Fremont High School graduating in 1954. As a gifted artist, she received a summer scholarship to the Otis Art Institute. She loved ceramics, drawing, silk screening, graphic design and china painting. While in college, she told her father she wanted to become an artist. Her father said, "You can't eat your art" so her education led her to pursue teaching. Then she attended Los Angeles City College graduating in 1956 with an Associate's degree and California State University, Los Angeles graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1958. In 1951, she accepted the Lord as her Savior at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA and sang in the junior choir. She started teaching 2nd grade Sunday school at age 17 and was involved in the church debate team. While in college, she participated in Youth for Christ and Campus Crusade for Christ. Evie met her husband Robert M. Shivers at the wedding of her lifelong friend Mamie Russell Oliver. They were married February 22, 1959. They added to their union three children: Teresa, Timothy and Nathan. Evie worked as a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 44 years and served in many schools throughout the district. She transferred into the Federal Title I program in the late 1970's and taught in several Catholic Schools throughout Los Angeles County. She specialized in reading, math remediation and basic science from kindergarten to 8th grade. Following her retirement, she and her husband moved to Columbus, OH in 2008 to be closer to their adult children. She joined and was an active member of Vineyard Columbus. Evie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Shivers (2018); sister Susie Pearl Wilson (2019). She is survived by her daughter Teresa Shivers Wimbush (James); son Timothy G. Shivers (Rebecca); son Nathan T. Shivers Sr. (Karen); grandchildren: Jared, Spencer, Monique, Nathan Jr. and Naomi; sisters-in-law: Almita Shivers, Kathy Shivers Ward (Jimmy); brother-in-law Joseph Shivers along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends.
