Frances Diggs Shelby

Frances Elise Diggs Shelby, age 84, died Thursday, July 1, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas D. Shelby and parents, Frank and Loretta Diggs. She is survived by two children, Thomas Diggs Shelby and Gay Shelby (Athornia) Steele; grandson, Shelby Steele; sisters, Patricia Dalton and Jacqueline Pettiford, both of Chillicothe, OH; brother, Frank (Teddy) Diggs; sister-in-law, Charlene Diggs; twelve nieces and nephews and twenty two great nieces and nephews who were near and dear to her heart. She is also survived by a host of cousins and friends. Frances was a 1944 graduate of Coalton High School and moved to Columbus shortly thereafter. She was a longtime preschool teacher at Ohio Avenue Day Care Center. Her service to St. Philip Lutheran Church included membership in the Altar Guild, Christian Education and member of the Usher Board. She was an advocate for social justice and member of Woodland Park Neighborhood Association. Special appreciation to Beverly Hodge, cousin, for the care she offered Frances during her final weeks. Family is requesting in lieu of flowers contributions be made to St. Philip Lutheran Church.
