Fred Andrews, 78, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Isabelle Ridgway Care Center in Columbus. He was born on September 4, 1932 in Thomaston, Georgia and moved with his family to Columbus, Ohio at an early age. He attended Franklin Jr. High School and was a graduate of East High School, where he was a member of the 1951 State Basketball Championship team. He also attended Central State College and The Ohio State University. Fred's love of basketball afforded him the opportunity to travel with The Harlem Globetrotters and play with The Magicians Team which included Goose Tatum and Marquis Hayes. In addition, Fred coached teams for the Ohio Institute of Technology (now DeVry University) and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Fred was preceded in death by his parents Retha Matthews Andrews and Arthur Andrews, three brothers, James, Pete, and Brown, two sisters Ollie Gray and Pearl Morris, and three nephews, Herbert, Vincent, and Craig Wilks. He is survived by one devoted sister Linda (Herbert) Wilks; nieces, Priscilla, Fay, Terri, Theresa, and Charmella; nephews, Gary, Tyrone, Craig, and Shannon; a host of other relatives and friends, including his East High School Reunion Committee. Funeral Service 2 p.m., Friday, October 1, 2010 at St. Philip Episcopal Church, 166 Woodland Ave., where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the start of service. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.
