Gloria Ann (Stewart) Jackson

Gloria Ann Stewart Jackson was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 3, 1922. She was the second of five children born to Pearl Ruth Singer Stewart (Big Mom) and Joseph Franklin Stewart. She had an outgoing personality, spoke as she pleased, and had a lot of friends. Gloria died in Berkeley CA, May 28, 2011 at the age of 87. Gloria graduated from Central High School in Columbus after attending Chicago Avenue Elementary School and Everett Junior High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from The Ohio State University. Gloria later received a Masters in Education from Xavier University in Cincinnati. As a student at Ohio State University Gloria married Russell Hunter Jackson of Columbus Ohio. Their families lived in the same neighborhood on the north side of Columbus. After graduating from Ohio State, Gloria relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts with Russell as he entered Harvard Law School. The couple had two sons, David Russell Jackson and Keith Hunter Jackson, whom Gloria would raise alone when Russell died of heart failure in 1957 at the age of 36. She was proud of her sons and took delight in their accomplishments in science and law. David, who attended UCLA Law School became a respected attorney, and died in 2003. And, Keith a graduate of Morehouse College and Stanford University is a physicist. Gloria would visit them frequently in California. Gloria worked at the Franklin county welfare department from 1958 to 1962. From 1962 and until her retirement in 1982, Gloria was a teacher and administrator for the Columbus City Public Schools. For many years she worked as a Visiting Teacher, helping academically challenged students develop their passion and skill for learning. Gloria was very active in her community (Eastgate). She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Jack Jill of America, the Barrister’s Wives, and several Bridge Clubs over the years. She was a skilled and avid Bridge Player playing the game with gusto and passion throughout her life. Gloria was also an energetic tennis player as one of her niece’s fondly recalls. She was a wonderful gourmet cook and would host lovely Sunday dinners for her family members. Gloria is survived by her son, Keith Hunter Jackson, her grandchildren Kamilah and Akil Jackson, her sister Josephine Goode, her brother-in-law Harold McDaniel, DDS, her sister in law, Eloise Jackson Pickett and numerous cousins, 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 4 great -nephews, 1 great -niece.
