Goldie Bernice Carter (Phillips) was born in Columbus Ohio on January 3, 1921 to Virgil Lee and Annabelle Philips. She is the 7th Child of 12 Children. After graduating from Central High School in 1939 she attended Thortons Beauty Academy and graduated in 1940. She worked in many beauty shops in Columbus including Cinderella Beauty Salon on Long Street. She left Columbus to work with her Sister Marie in her beauty salon in Newark Ohio. While in Newark she met Robert Savoy Ross and they were married on October 18, 1942 in Cleveland Ohio. They were blessed with two wonderful sons, Robert Ross Jr. and David Ross. Robert served in WWII in Germany and was awarded a purple heart. Sadly he passed away on Sept. 18, 1959. She later married Neville Carter and after her divorce she moved to Detroit Michigan where she worked in the beauty industry until retiring. After retiring she moved back to Columbus. She accepted Christ at an early age; was baptized by Orum Lee Trope Sr. in Detroit Michigan. Bernice was a faithful member of Watkins Road Church of Christ in Columbus, Ohio under ministers R. Sweet, V. Johnson and Arthur Broomfield Sr. She served on various committees over the years. She helped so many people-visiting the sick and shut-ins, cooking and serving meals, house cleaning and being a good friend to many. After retiring, Bernice took up painting. She received numerous certificates of recognition for her art work. She had a reception and showing of her art in a private home on August 3, 2002. She was also a member of the Eastern Stars. Preceded in death by parents, son: Robert Ross Jr; brothers: Roland, Benjamin, Alonozo, Richard, Leroy, and Malcom; sisters: Rosalee, Delores, Marie, and Alberta; grandson: Anthony Ross; daughter in law: Teresa Ross. Bernice leaves to cherish her memory son: David (Marcia) Ross Sr.; granddaughter: Tora Russell; grandson Eric Ross, David (Aretha) Ross Jr. ; great grandchildren: Niko Russell, David Ross III, Maliyah Ross, Naria Ross, Bailey Ross; sister Virginia (Leroy) Banker; Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; Special nieces Zora Callahan Jones and Dr. Beverly Gaines Phipps.
