Professor Grady “Gil” Landers Pettigrew, while serving as the Natural Sciences Professor at the College of Micronesia (Kosrae Campus) suddenly and unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord on August 17, 2014. A graduate of St Charles High School, he held a Bachelor of Science from Earlham College and the Master of Science from Central Missouri State. A dedicated professor, scientist and researcher, Gil taught at Miami-Dade College, Nova Southeastern University and Inter-American University in Florida until he accepted an appointment as Natural Sciences Professor at the College of Micronesia. As a founding Naturalist for Florida's Urban Paradise Guild, Gil was instrumental in restoring the almost-extinct species of Atala Butterfly. Widely published as a researcher, scholar, poet, artist and photographer, Gil was an enrolled Creek/Cherokee Native American Tribal Member. Born in Columbus, OH, Gil leaves his parents, The Honorable Grady and The Reverend Dr. Carolyn Landers Pettigrew, of Columbus, OH; his sister, Dr. Dawn Karima Pettigrew, of Cherokee, NC; and a host of family, friends and students to celebrate his legacy of love for education, nature, science and the arts.
