Gregory Cartier

August 7, 1949 — January 16, 2023

Gregory Willis Cartier, 73, died on Monday January 16, 2023, preceded in death by his Father, Herschel D. Cartier, and mother, Juanita Whaley Cartier. Left to cherish his memories are his sons, Andre and Christopher Cartier and Brendan Tillman, brother , Dwight E. Cartier and sister , Roxyanne Cartier-Burrus, nephews, Will L Burrus, Sr. ( Bianca) , Dwight M. Cartier, nieces, Melissa Cartier- Mason, (Charles) Tiffany Cartier-White, (Antwone), Ayanna Burrus ( Hafstein Gislason) , ex-wife Cassandra Cartier, and a host of grand nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Born August 7, 1949, Gregory grew up in the Shepard community and attended Shepard Elementary School, Johnson Park, and Eastmoor Jr High Schools and graduated from Eastmoor Sr. High School in 1968. As a child he played little league baseball and was a former Boy Scout in Troop 262 at St. Paul AME church where he attended and grew up as a child. In scouting he achieved the ranking of Cub, Star and Explorer scout and his dad, Herschel D Cartier, was the scout master.


Gregory learned to play drums at an early age. During his years in junior high and high school Gregory played drums in the school Concert, Dance and Marching bands. And he played drums for the Soul T’s band during high school. He continued to play drums after high school with several other bands with his brother, Dwight. In addition, he was on the school’s baseball and basketball teams. He was extremely talented in baseball and received the honor of an All-City Award recognition.


Gregory attended Rio Grande College in Gallipolis, Ohio, Southern Colorado State in Pueblo, Colorado, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio. He was employed with the State of Ohio for 30 years in the Department of Taxation as a Tax Auditor and Administrator. Gregory retired from the State of Ohio in 2004.


His sons proudly describe him as a father who was great role model, friend, leader, educator, and claim him as the “best father” ever.


Gregory struggled with his failing health during the last couple years and spent many days in and out of the hospital trying to get well. He has now joined his loving mother and Father in heaven but will be remembered as a wonderful and loving brother, father, Uncle, and friend. Those who know him well will never forget his engaging smile , his kind spirit and how much he enjoyed life . We love him and will forever miss his earthly presence. May he eternally rest in peace in God’s presence.
