Grutcher Mae Roberts

Grutcher Mae (Downs) Roberts, age 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on October 7, 2010, with her family by her side. She was a resident at Manor at Whitehall. Lifetime member of Trinity Baptist Church, as well as a five year member of Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith. She was a beautiful, loving, Christian woman, who spent her life helping others and spreading Gods word. A devoted mother to her two daughters and was always there for her extended family. She worked in the food service industry retiring from the Columbus Public School System. She served as president of the Dorcas home and foreign missionary society; sang in the Mission Chorus, Senior Choir No II, and the Harmony Force Vocal Choir. She was a member of the Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan Singing convention where she served as financial secretary for twenty-seven (27) years. She was also a member of the Culturettes organization of beauticians where she served as treasurer for a number of years. She served as worthy matron in the Rose of Sharon chapter of the order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Birthday Club. She was a part of the Wednesday afternoon Senior Citizens group while at Church of Christ. Sister Roberts was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Walter and Ella Downs; siblings Jozzie Stone, James Downs, Walter Downs Jr., Katherine Long, Viola Hance, Rev. Harvey Downs, and Ruth Ann Frazier; granddaughter Denise Broady, and son in law, Walter Crockron Sr. She is survived by daughters, Daisy L. Crockron, and Barbara (William, Jr.) Pressie; 5 grandchildren, Cecil (Pamela) Hill, Janice Holmes (David) Reynolds, Otis (Ivy) Crockron Jr., David Crockron, and Eric (Dionne) Pressie; sister Mattie Castleberry; 12 great-grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Special thanks to the staff at The Manor at Whitehall, especially her day nurse Angie and the staff and chaplain of Allied Hospice.
