Hattie Price Mitchell

May 23, 1918 — August 27, 2021

Hattie Louise Price Mitchell, 103, formerly of Richmond, VA, and a resident of Hilliard, OH passed away on August 27, 2021, at Mill Run Gardens and Care Center. She was born in the Varina area of Henrico, VA, on May 23, 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin C. Mitchell; her parents, Philip & Ida Price; 5 brothers: Ellis, Philip Leon, C. Manning, Wilburt and Walter Price and 2 sisters: Mary Janet Vaughn and Inez Burrell. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Armstrong High School in 1938 and Virginia Union University with B.A. in 1944. Her first teaching job was in Goochland County, VA. She was an elementary teacher who taught at Rock Hill School, in Mechanicsville, VA; East End Elementary School in Hanover, VA and retired from Battlefield Park Elementary School in Mechanicsville, VA in 1980. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Richmond, VA where she was active as a Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Challengers, the Bell Choir, Seasoned Spices and Ladies Guild. She was a charter member of the Tots & Teens, Inc., Richmond chapter. After retiring, Mrs. Mitchell was engaged in her neighborhood community association, Meals on Wheels, and the Old Dominion Volunteer League. She was also a guest reader for the children at Battlefield Park Elementary School. She started as a teacher in a black segregated one room schoolhouse and ended her teaching career at an integrated elementary school. Hattie loved her family and friends. She never knew a stranger. She was always socializing with others, playing pinochle and bridge, and attending various dances with her husband, Ed. During her 103 years, she saw so many changes and innovations within the world and society, but adapted and met the “newfangled things” with wonder and curiosity. She will truly be missed by all. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Fern Mitchell Cheek; grandchildren: Austin (Angela), Scott and Alexis Cheek; great grandchildren, Jackson & Kennedy Cheek; sister Dorothy Henley, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is mourned by her church family and many special friends including the Cheek, Randolph, Scott, Brooks, Townes, and Carter families.
