Mrs. Helen Darlene Richardson Kent was born on December 18, 1922 to George Grady Richardson and Lena Ruben Richardson in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from Columbus East High School and earned a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from Wilberforce University (Wilberforce, Ohio), along with a degree in Elementary Education and Reading Development from The Ohio State University. Helen was a life member of Mt. Vernon Avenue A.M.E. Church and retired from the Columbus Public School System. Her 32 years of service to the district included assignments in the following capacities: Maryland Park Elementary School, Monroe Middle School, West High School, Title I Reading Teacher, Secondary Planner, Education Development Facility, and Columbus Public Schools' Model Cities Component. At one time, she was also an active member of many organizations and acted in the following roles: Past President, Columbus Chapter of the Wilberforce Alumni Association; Past President, Columbus Chapter of Leisurettes, Inc.; Past President, Columbus Chapter of Drifters, Inc.; and Past Second Vice President, Womens' Service Board at The King Arts Complex. On Thursday, August 16, 2012, Helen departed this life at The Kobacker House in Columbus. At the time of her passing, Helen was a resident of Plain City, Ohio. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, James Daniel Kent, brother Fred D. (Bluette) Richardson, and sisters, Estelle (Garfield) Capps, Maude (Robert) Kelley, and Elizabeth (Jess) Robinson. She is survived by sister-in-law Anne Kent, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
