Henrietta Spencer was born the second of six children to Walter R. Spencer Sr and Mable Jackson-Spencer on September 24, 1952 in Dixie, GA. Henrietta grew up in a loving Christian household of eight which consisted of her five siblings, mother, and father. The family later relocated to Ohioville, Pennsylvania. Before graduating Western Beaver High School in 1970, she participated in the high school choir as a soloist and choir member. From there she got involved in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Henrietta was also in the youth choir at Mt Olive Baptist Church. She loved singing and her voice was a pleasure with it’s comforting old school gospel sound.
On August 29, 1971 she moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend Thee Ohio State University but soon began her career at Nationwide Insurance. She obtained her Associate of Science Degree from Ohio Dominican University while employed at Nationwide. While there she worked in Finance where she retired from Mortgage and Loans as an Accountant. Henrietta dedicated 32 years of service to the company and she was very proud of her accomplishments while there. Most of all she gained a best-friend, Sharon Gates who’s friendship goes back to 1971 and Karen Spencer (sister in law).
Henrietta welcomed her son Michael Shawn on June 28, 1974. She affectionately called him “Big Head” and “Dude.” He was her pride and joy undoubtingly. On July 12, 1975 Henrietta entered into holy matrimony with John R. Wilson and into that union their beautiful daughter Michelle Rae’ was born. She affectionally called her “Chelle” and “Lady Lady.” She was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, and friend that never took these roles for granted. Family meant everything to her!
Standing at just 4ft 11inches tall she was a true warrior for Christ. She continued to serve and train up her children according to the word of God. Henrietta became a member of Mount Gerizim Baptist Church where she served as one of the youth choir directors. Later in the 1990’s she joined New Salem Missionary Baptist Church. While there she served as a youth teacher in children’s church. She was also an active Minister and active in the ministry helping to serve where she was needed. Henrietta had joined her brother’s church, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. There she would sing and lead in prayer. She continued her faithful service work until she peacefully went home to be with our Heavenly Father on January 31, 2023.
Henrietta was known for her beautiful bridal bouquets. She enjoyed putting together one of a kind timeless pieces that each bride could love and adore for years. Her daughter and son in law’s wedding was the final wedding she did in May 2015. From there she went on to being a breast cancer survivor and pushing through MS. When checking on her she would always say “I’m alright. I won’t complain.” There was so much strength and love within her and that is how we want to remember her.
