Herman Lee Galloway was born January 8, 1925 in Columbus, Ohio to Ollie Galloway and Elizabeth Shocker Galloway. As a young man, Herman worked at The Depot for two years before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he served as a Cook. Herman’s food was always in demand and his shipmates were happy when he was in the galley. He received an honorable discharge in November 1945. Herman retired from the State of Ohio after over 25 years of employment as a Sanitation Engineer. He believed in hard work and often said “do it right the first time and there’ll be no need to repeat.” People were always pleased when they found out that Galloway was assigned to their area. They knew his work would be flawless and that they would be treated with love and respect. Herman received many accolades and awards for his excellent service. Herman enjoyed music and singing. He played a “mean” organ and sang in many church choirs over the years. He was a God-fearing man. His guilty pleasure was the lottery. He’d play morning, noon, and night; however, he always shared his winnings with someone who was in need. He departed this life peacefully on Friday, December 31, 2011 at his residence. Herman was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Ferman Galloway, longtime companion Helen Boone, aunt Alice Love, and great nephews, Irvin Neal, James Neal, Burnett Broadnax, and William Neal. Herman is survived by his great nieces Charlotte (Oscar) Chapman and Patricia Baker; great nephew Jeffrey (Pat) Broadnax; great-great nephew Jaron Chapman; a host of other great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives, neighbors, and friends, including special friend Tommy L. Cannon. The family will receive friends for a Memorial Celebration, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 25, 2011 in the chapel of DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long Street.
