Isaac Reid Jr

December 30, 1933 — August 31, 2013

Dr. Isaac Marshall Reid, Jr. was born December 30, 1933, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He and his family eventually moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he attended North Carolina AT University. Graduating with honors, he later attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in medicine. This is where he met and married his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Lou (Perry) Reid. In 1959, he graduated with a degree in medicine and shortly thereafter, served in the United States Air Force earning the rank of Captain. Dr. Reid specialized in Pediatrics and following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, began a 54-year career providing exceptional care to children, in San Francisco, California and Cleveland, Ohio. Dedicated to community medicine, he served as a long-time member of the Kaiser Permanente team in Cleveland as one of the highly trained and respected medical professionals. Dr. Reid and his wife began the first Free Clinic in Cleveland, providing medical care, substance abuse counseling and crisis intervention to the underserved in the city. He also served on many boards and advisory committees throughout his career, and ultimately retired from the position of Chief of Pediatrics which he held for over four decades. Never willing to relinquish his pursuit of caring for those with the greatest need, Dr. Reid continued providing medical care to children and teens on a part-time basis at the Neon Southeast Health Center. In his later years, as he renewed his Christian walk, he was an active member of the Good Shepard Baptist Church, serving on the medical ministry, where he was beloved by its members and leaders alike. As his health declined, Dr. Reid moved to Columbus, Ohio and lived with one of his devout and dedicated daughters (Stephani) who single-handedly cared for him in a loving and compassionate manner for several years. He attended and was a member of the Columbus Christian Center during this time. At the age of 79, following a lengthy illness, Dr. Reid went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at his Columbus residence. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Elizabeth L. Reid, and his parents, Isaac Nelson and Carrie Belle Reid. He is survived by his children, Kim (Jon) White, Jescica Stevenson, Stephani Reid, and Isaac Sean Reid; 7 beloved grandchildren, Janise and John White, Kourtnea, Akil, and Maiya Stevenson, and Isaiah and Imani Johnson; his siblings, Blondelle Hunter, Harold (Sina) Reid, Roy (Agnes) Reid, as well as wonderful nieces, nephews, great nieces and a great nephew. He was a wonderful man, hard-working, tenacious, compassionate and strong. He loved his wife, children (each and every generation), siblings, parents, colleagues and friends. While he is no longer with us, we know that he has reunited with his wife and is in the presence of the Lord. Until we meet again, we will rejoice in remembrance of you.
