Jacqueline “Jackie” Loytelle Rogers Stewart was born December 28, 1940 to Lolo Rogers and Doris Germany Rogers. In her early years, Jackie was educated by Ms. Logan at the St. Mark Baptist Church, in Chamberlain, Louisiana, where she was also baptized at an early age and attended with her grandparents. Jackie lived with her grandparents, Willie and Florence Russ Rogers, on the Orange Grove sugar cane plantation while her father was away during World War II. Upon his return, Lolo relocated Jackie and her family to Baton Rouge. There, she attended and graduated Scott Street Elementary School, as well as Capitol High School, Class of ‘59. Her radiant and warm personality naturally drew people to her; she had a vast amount of friends as a result. Jackie also possessed a beautiful and strong voice that matched her physical and personal traits perfectly. First realizing her gift through study and training under Ms. Richelle at New Hope Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Jackie received much praise and accolades for her singing abilities. Shortly after graduation, Jackie enlisted in the military, joining the Women’s Army Corps. During her enlistment, she met SSG Robert Stewart, fell in love, and decided to start a family with him. The two would relocate to Oklahoma, Washington, and Germany before choosing to settle down in Columbus, Ohio. In Columbus, Jackie found a church home at Trinity Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated servant to the Lord for over five decades. From singing to culinary services, to lending an ear and inspirational words, Jackie would do whatever she could to help others. She organized the Comfort Ministry at her church, and was a member of various choirs throughout the city, including the Harmony Force Shape Note Singers. Throughout her time in Columbus, Jackie was employed with several agencies, including the Ohio Theater, State of Ohio, and Meals on Wheels, before retiring from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) as a system accountant. On May 18, 2017, at the age of 76, Jacqueline L. Stewart was called home to eternal rest with her Lord and Savior. In addition to her parents and husband, Jackie is predeceased by her sons, Richard “Dicky” Tanner and Robert “Bobby” Stewart, stepmother Luella “Mother” Dehon Rogers, brother Cleo “Pappy” Rogers, and son-in-law George Slate. Left to cherish her legacy are her children, Marcialene Slate, Doris Stewart, Christopher Stewart, Stephanie Stewart, and Vincent (Jackie) Stewart; brother Andrew Patin; sisters, Theresa Kelly, Velma (Louis) Armstrong, Cleotha Alexis (Louis) Rogers, Flora Mae Rogers, Rose Johnson, Irma Davis, and Sonda Rogers; uncle Lawrence Rogers of Compton, California; aunts, Daisy Eames of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, and Wilhelmina Bailey of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and neighbors.
