James Edward Womack, Jr.

James “Jimmy” Edward Womack, Jr., 74, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Zusman House Hospice in Columbus, OH. Born in Charleston, WV on February 26, 1943 to James Edward Womack, Sr. and Beulah Alston Womack, Jimmy is proceeded in death by his parents, sister Barbara Womack, and brother Laurence A. Womack. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1959 at the age of 16, where he lettered in tennis. Upon graduation, he attended West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University), participating on the 1961 West Virginia Inter-Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team. During the summer of 1961, Jimmy left West Virginia State College and entered the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in France and played for the Laon Air Force Base basketball team, where he earned the nickname “Jumpin' Jim” Womack, lead the team in scoring, and quickly became a fan favorite. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Jimmy moved to Columbus, Ohio and joined the United States Postal Service, where he served for 38 years as a letter carrier, union steward and everyone’s favorite mailman until he retired in May of 2003. In addition to being known as “The Mailman”, Jimmy was also an avid bowler, having served as a past President of The National Bowling Association. During his bowling career, he has scored four perfect 300 games and an 800 series. Jimmy was a member of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful steward and former servant leader on the Men’s Usher Board. He served until his health prohibited him from serving. On April 12, 1971, Jimmy met Hazel M. Latimer and the two were married on May 29, 1971. To this union, they were blessed with three children. On the morning of December 6, 2017, while in his loving wife’s arms, Jimmy went to be with the Lord. To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving wife Hazel M. Womack; daughter Monica L. Womack; sons James “Trey” E. (Alisha) Womack, III and Jason L. (Tyra DeBerry) Womack; nine grandchildren, William K. Maynus, II, Jasmine C. Womack, Jaylon L. Womack, Cleveland H. Brown, Jr., Brooklynn J. Womack, Olivia M. Womack, Skylar E. Womack, James E. Womack, IV and Zoey M. Womack; sister-in-laws, Louise Womack and Mildred (Laland) Cooley; special cousins Barbara Jo (Clarence) Vassar, Dorothy Harris and Judy Austin; close friends, Deacon Clarence Glover, Larry Lenston, Ronald Sanders, Morgan Jones and Billy Moore; as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.
