James Gentry Grady, known also as Slick, was born August 7, 1948 in Greenville, South Carolina. After growing up in South Carolina, James enlisted in the Armed Forces at age 17. He retired from the United States Marine Corps after serving as a Lance Corporal in Vietnam, during which time he received several citations including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Purple Heart Medal. After the service, he relocated to Ohio. An avid outdoorsman, explorer, and survivalist, James ran his family like his own private military. At the age of 63, James passed away on Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Isabelle Ridgway Care Center. His father James Grady, stepmother Shirley Grady, and sister Mary, preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Lora, Robin, Monica, James, and Jessica; mother Mary Elizabeth Perrin; grandchildren, Demitra, Kenny, Dwight, Chere, Keirra, Kim, Kyesha, Manila, Tyreque, Leila, Kalia; great grandson Aundre; siblings, Denise, Gail, Roy, Maria, and Gloria; former wife Judith Washington; and a host of other relatives and friends.
