James Manuel Stevenson, known to many as Jim or Steve, was born July 26, 1942 to James O. Stevenson and Viola B. (Shellost) Stevenson in Columbus, Ohio. As a young man, he attended Refuge Baptist Church and was a 1960 graduate of East High School. Shortly thereafter, Jim enlisted in the United States Army. While serving as a member of the Armed Forces, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and achieved the designation of Expert Rifleman before receiving an honorable discharge from active duty. Eventually, Jim embarked on a career in retail clothing sales and retired from The Schottenstein Company and Value City Department Stores after thirty years of dedicated service. He later relocated to the Cincinnati area and joined the sales team of KG Clothing Stores where he was employed until the time of his passing. Jim also volunteered with the Board of Elections and very much enjoyed contributing his time as a poll worker on election days. On September 21, 2016, at the age of 74, James departed this earthly life while at the Daniel Drake Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Thelma Crockett and Maxine Pyant, brothers, Earl Washington and Billie Washington, grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Nellie Hendricks, aunt and uncle, Rev. and Mrs. Rosa Rampley, nieces, Sharon Pyant and Vivian Crockett, nephews, Doug Washington, Danny Washington, Jerome Crockett, Eddie Crockett, and Edmond Crockett. Those who remain to cherish memories of James include his sister Geraline (Eugene) Gunn of Columbus; brother-in-law James Pyant, Sr. of Floressant, Missouri; nieces, Gwen Johnson, Michell Gunn, Vickie (Jeffrey) Durham, Bernetta Chubs, Carolyn Harshaw, Dora Crockett, Delores Crockett, Tomar Marshall, all of Columbus, Terri Pyant, and Linda Cason, both of Floressant; nephews, Michael (Angela) Gunn, Bernard Gunn, of Columbus, James Pyant, Jr. of Floressant, Hayma Washington of Los Angeles, California, and Gary Crockett; and a host of other relatives and friends.
