James Willie Jones, 74, beloved husband of Shirley Alexander-Jones, went home to be with the Lord on May 2, 2016. James committed his life to the Lord at an early age and was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church. James was honored to be the first African-American police officer in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and served in Germany. Jim loved to root for that “team up north” and to tease all the Buckeye fans in our family as we watched the games. In his earlier years, he enjoyed going to Smith Farms to pick produce. As his health declined, he would still go to the farm to select picked produce and deliver it to the family. He was grateful for the visits of Rev. Raymond R. Payne and thoroughly enjoyed their fellowship and prayers together. James is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Agnes Jones, his brother Robert Jones, and sister Sarah Thomas. Left to cherish his memory, in addition to his devoted wife, Shirley Alexander-Jones, is his loving daughter, Tamara (Charles Watson) Alexander; sisters, Sadie (George) Bell, and Mary (Lester) Reed; brothers, Nelson (Vernetta) Jones, Phillip (Roberta) Jones, and Rogers (Colleen) Jones; special friends, Toni (Alphonso) Coleman, Curtis Hunt, William (Ayana) Scott, Minnie (Robert) Singletary, and Virginia Hinton; grandchildren, Torin Simpson, Charles, and Lauryn Watson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Maxine (Russell) Manns, Patricia (Wilbur) Bethel, and Bettina Carey; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations have been requested to be made in honor of James W. Jones to Mt. Carmel Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
