Joan Angella Mclean

Joan Angella (Williams) McLean, age 82, of Laurel Maryland, transitioned home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, after a lengthy battle with Dementia and Multiple Myeloma.

Joan was born on May 15, 1940, in Kingston, Jamaica to Hugh Williams and Carmen (Decosta) Williams. Joan was a happy little girl who was very caring and loved music. Joan enjoyed going to school and excelled academically. She graduated from high school and took clerical courses and became an Administrative Assistant.

Joan met the love of her life, Astley McLean in Kingston, Jamaica. Astley was a bus driver and drove the city bus. Joan was attracted to his beautiful brown eyes. Astley laid eyes on her and knew she would be his wife. In 1962 they moved to Staten Island, New York, and Astley’s dream of marrying her came true, on June 23, 1963. Joan was a beautiful bride, wife, and eventually mother to their three children. Joan loved her children and created many memories. The family enjoyed road trips and holidays where they were able to indulge in their many West Indian dishes. The family moved from New York to Columbus, Ohio in the summer of 1971.

Joan accepted Christ into her life at a very young age. She instilled in her children the love of God. Joan had a very strong work ethic and valued working and saving. One thing she leaves in our hearts is her love of laughter. She retired from PNC Bank after 30 years. After retiring, she and Astley moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL to enjoy the warm weather and relax. Joan and Astley were very happy in retirement. They spent time going to dinner and meeting new friends until Astley’s life was tragically taken away. Even after the tragedy of losing her husband of 49 years, Joan continued to have faith and knew God’s grace would carry her through. Joan remained in Florida for several years before she relocated to Maryland and eventually to Morningside House of Laurel Senior Living Community. The staff and residents at Morningside loved Joan’s radiant smile and called her their Caribbean Queen.

She is preceded in death by her Father, Hugh Williams; her Mother, Carmen (Decosta) Williams; Brother Gladstone Williams and her Husband, Astley Roy McLean.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Marcia Broadnax, and Donna McLean; Son, Anthony (Jajuana) McLean; Her Grandchildren, Brandon Broadnax, Devin Broadnax, Deija McLean, and Jared McLean; and Great Grandson, Xavier Broadnax.
