Joseph Augustus 'Joe' Summers

Joseph Augustus Summers was born April 14, 1949 in Statesville, North Carolina. On July 21, 2016, at the age of 67, he entered peacefully into rest while at The Ohio State University Medical Center’s East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. A longtime resident of Columbus, Joe was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest pleasures in life were family, babies and little children, and basketball. Joe was a natural caregiver and a true nurturer. He provided care and managed homes for adults with developmental disabilities. He was a friend to many and he never met a stranger. Joe’s passing leaves a void in many lives. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, David Jonathan Summers and Claudia Mae Smith. Those left to cherish memories of his life include his wife of 27 years, Jeanette Summers; children Debbie Jo (Hood) and Sheila (Michael) Kendrick; stepchildren, Celeste Winstead, Lena Thompkins of Galloway, Ohio, Eddie Winstead of Akron, Ohio, Shanena Thomas, and Jacoby (Nicole) Thomas; brothers, David Lee (Debra) Summers, William Summers, Geoffrey (Dreidre) Summers, Elliott (Linda) Smith, and Ronald (Melonie) Smith; sisters, Beatrice Charles, Gwendolyn Summers, and Daa’iyah Jordan of Long Beach, California; and a host of grandchildren, one great grandchild, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many special friends.
