Judge Honorae Alfred Glascor, age 97, departed this life on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Laurels of Norworth. A son of a sharecropper, Al was born January 15, 1914 in Augusta, Georgia. In 1921, his family relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated from East High School. In 1939, he graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.A. in History and an advanced degree in Law, and that same year, he was admitted to the practice of law by the Ohio State Supreme Court. He began practicing criminal defense while mentored by 2 prominent attorneys, Ray E. Hughes and Wilbur King. Al married Mary Carter Milner in 1946 and together they bore 2 children, Rayford (1947) and Jennifer (1955). Awarded a Juris Doctorate from OSU in 1967, Alfred practiced as a legal counselor for over 37 years until Governor James A. Rhodes appointed him to a seat on the Franklin County Municipal Court in 1976. He was then elected to 2 consecutive 6 year terms, serving as Adminstrative and Presiding Judge from 1983 to 1986. After retiring from the Franklin County bench in 1990, Judge Glascor served as a visiting judge for the Ohio State Supreme Court. He was a devoted member of the Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations and was recognized by the Ohio State Bar Association for his 65 years of legal service. Throughout his career, Judge Glascor enjoyed his passion for mentoring others. He encouraged his own children and others to pursue higher education along with their dreams and interests. He was the co-founder of The Second Community Church, in 1961, where he served as a founding trustee, choir member, Sunday school class teacher, and legal advisor. Most recently, he was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Judge Glascor's civic involvements were vast, including serving on the Columbus Police Athletic League Board, the Boy Scouts of America Extension Committee, and life membership with the NAACP, and the OSU Alumni Association. Additionally, he was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for over 75 years, a charter member of the Robert B. Elliott Law Club, and a proud sponsor of the U.S. Special Olympics Foundation and the Faith (Homeless) Mission. During World War II, he was a member of the U.S. Army Draft Review Board. Judge Glascor received a personal acknowledgement of civic service from President George H. W. Bush and his wife, Barbara. Considering himself a world traveler, Al visited at least 45 states, all the European capitals, Canada, USSR, South America, and many Caribbean and Pacific islands. For over 20 years, he maintained an Indian Lake home, fondly known as Buckeye Country, which he used strictly for the enjoyment of friends and family. Preceded in death by son Rayford C. Glascor, parents Fannie and Sebron Glascor, and siblings, Lula Lovett, Dorsey Glascor, Alberta Anderson, Beau Glascor, and Leanna Starks. Survived by devoted wife of 65 years, Mary; daughter Jennifer Lynn Glascor; grandson Myles Glascor; daughter-in-law Ernestine Glascor; extended family, David, Wilma, and Amy Graeff, Atty. E. Scott Shaw, Mike Cook, and John McFadden; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and dear friends. Celebration of Life 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 2048 Denune Avenue. Pastor Donnetta Peaks, officiating. Judge Glascor will lie in state Friday, 12 - 4 pm, at DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long Street. The family will receive visitors at the church, Saturday from 9 a.m. until the start of service. (Omega Psi Phi ritual to begin at 10 a.m.) Interment Green Lawn Cemetery.
