Julia Chloe Bowling Fleming was born June 28, 1936, in Prestwick, Alabama, to the late Edmond & Essie Bowling. She attended Prestwick Public Schools. After graduation she attended Spaulding Business College in Mobile Alabama. While attending Spaulding Business College she met and later married Johnnie Fleming. To this union four children were born. She also raised a nephew as her own for a short time. Julia relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1963 with her family, after her husband’s job transferred him. She was employed with Lazarus Department Store where she retired in 1989. At an early age, Julia joined Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church, in Prestwick. She was a lifetime member of the A.M.E. Zion Church. She was a faithful and dedicated member of the First A.M.E. Zion Church (formerly Caldwell Temple) in Columbus, Ohio serving as a Deaconess, Class Leader, Missionary worker for the Supply Department and Parent Body of the WH&OM Society, she served as President of the Stewardess Board, she was also part of the Women’s Chorus, and the Hospitality Committee. She served as the Governor for the State of Alabama, during the Annual All States Tea. Julia loved to travel. One of her most notable journeys was to Italy where she toured everything from the Ruins of Pompei to the Sistine Chapel inside the Vatican. If you said LET’S Julia said, GO. From the East Coast to the West Coast from North to South, she was part of what her Sisters call OGT (Original Girls Trip) Julia departed this life on Saturday, November 14, 2020 after a short illness, surrounded by her loved ones. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 45 years Johnnie Fleming, daughter Mary Fleming-Johnson, siblings, Mary E. (Alvin) Singleton, Alice Davison, James F. Bowling, Henry Bowling and Mattie Bowling Ramsey. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, her children, Leo “Buddy” Fleming, Brenda Fleming, Essie (Lee) Tatum, Barry (Kate) Edwards. Her grandchildren, Christy (Tyrone) Ellis, Jason Fleming, Edmond Fleming, Takila Tatum, Terry (India) Tatum. Her Great-Grandchildren, Dominique Scott, Tyler, Johnathan & Christopher Ellis, Jamal, Jaysin, Imari, & Jordyn Fleming, Serenity & Sky Henderson, Zachariah & Zion Tatum, Goddaughter Jennifer McClain, Special Friend Lois Erby and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
