Julius William Mayo, Jr. was born to Julius and Stella Burns Mayo on September 4, 1941 in Steubenville, Ohio. He is the second of three children. After moving to Columbus in 1961, he worked at The Ohio State University in Housekeeping Services, and later for Columbus City Schools as a warehouseman for 39 years. During this period he was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church. His membership included singing in the Gospel Choir, a Scout Master for the Trinity Baptist Boy Scout Troop, and a Sunday School teacher. In his free time, Brother Julius enjoyed studying the bible, exercise, learning about health and wellness, listening to classic RB, gospel and soul music, playing checkers, creating inspirational signs for the church and home and even the occasional video game. Julius believed in the power of education, he coined the term Mayo school. By offering loved ones books to read, and additional homework assignments he made sure that his children, nieces, and nephews had a strong beginning on their educational journey. Julius departed this life to abide with the Heavenly Creator on Sunday, June 18, 2017. He is predeceased by his parents, and his brother Raymond Mayo. He is survived by his wife, Lillian M. Holland Mayo; daughter Rochelle Mayo-Barrett (John); two sons, Phillip (Lovie) and Julius Mayo; granddaughters Kimberly Debnam and Zoë Mayo-Barrett; grandson Ray’mond Julius Mayo; sister Carolyn Mayo Mazloomi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
