Lorene Hobbs Mitchell, age 92, of Columbus, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Lorene was born in Dawson, Georgia on June 18, 1921. She graduated from Spencer High School in Columbus, Georgia. On April 12, 1942, Lorene Hobbs married Archie Mitchell, Sr. of Columbus, Georgia; they were happily married for 65 years. Following Archie's discharge from the Army after WWII, Archie and Lorene relocated to Columbus, Ohio. Lorene was a talented seamstress for Lang Cleaners, Morehouse Fashion Department Store and Lazarus Department Store for more than 45 years combined until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed sewing, walking, swimming, traveling and attending her children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's many activities and events. Always active in the church, initially at Refuge Baptist Church, then Gay Tabernacle Baptist Church prior to becoming a founding member of Central Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was a member of the Deaconess Board. Additionally, Lorene supported numerous local charities. Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Mitchell, Sr., on February 7, 2007. Lorene Mitchell is survived by six children, Barbara (James) Pender of Kernersville, NC, Patricia Franklin of Detroit, MI, Gwen (Lucien) Edmonds of Tampa, FL, Archie (Patricia) Mitchell, Jr. of Alexandria, VA, Reggie (Sandra) Mitchell of Columbus, OH and Percy (Marva) Mitchell of Dalzell, SC; 12 grandchildren;16 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
